My Pals are Here! Science Activity Books (2E) aim to stimulate young minds, cultivate their interest, and spark their curiosity in finding out about the things around them. It adopts a hands-on and inquiry-based approach to the learning of Science, helping pupils to explore and reinforce the concepts learned in the textbook.

There is a wide variety of challenging and interesting activities in the books, ranging from experiments and investigations and worksheets to projects and research on the Internet for information. These activities develop pupils’ skills and processes, while helping them understand the purpose for inquiry. Each activity book includes a review exercise at the end with multiple choice and structured questions.

Following the themes of the latest Primary Science syllabus in Singapore, there are four books for Primary 5&6 – Cycles, Systems, Energy and, Interactions.

(Above is adapted from the back cover of activity book.)

Our recommendation:

The activity books for Primary 5&6 can be used in a school or home setting. Most of the activities require simple household items or items easily obtained in a grocery or department store. A few activities require more specialized but relatively inexpensive laboratory equipment, such as beakers, laboratory thermometers, spring balance, or iodine solution, which can be obtained from a school science supply store. There are a few activities that require more expensive equipment, such as a microscope or a data logger and heat sensor. The experiment requiring a data logger and heat sensor could be done without, and the two requiring a microscope could be skipped. Substitutions are possible for some experiments, such as a different flowering plant for a tiger lily, bowls for Petri dishes, the stove for a Bunsen burner, and a chicken egg for a quail egg. This series is written for schools, so do expect some adaptation if you are using it for home school.

The activity books do not include an answer key. Answers are found in the Teacher’s Guide.
