Training programs

SingaporeMath.com Inc does not operate a teacher training program.  We do, however, have the following contacts to make school training more readily available for schools:
  • Providers of professional development resources:

    • Staff Development for Educators (SDE) was founded more than twenty-five years ago by two educators. SDE provides professional development resources for PreK through grade 12 educators. SDE started conducting training on Singapore Math in 2004.  Please click to request for SDE customized training services information.

    • SMARTTraining (Singapore Math Associates, Resource and Teacher Training) was started by a group of classroom teachers with combined experience of over fifteen years with the Singapore Math materials, and over 30 years experience in education.  In addition to being avid math lovers, members of SMARTTraining have traveled to Singapore, met with members of the Ministry of Education and Curriculum authors at the National Institute of Education, and observed the curriculum in action in several Singapore Primary and Secondary schools.
  • Mathematics professors with experience in Singapore math programs:

    • Dr. Yoram Sagher (Professor of Mathematics, Florida Atlantic University) is available for teacher training.  Professor Sagher can be contacted by email at yoram.sagher@gmail.com.

    • Dr. Richard Bisk is available for teacher training.  He is Department Chair and  Professor of Mathematics at Worcester State College in Massachusetts. Professor Bisk maintains a web site with information about the Singapore program: wwwfac.worcester.edu./smip   He can be contacted by email at rbisk@worcester.edu.

    • Dr. Scott Baldridge (Assistant Professor, Louisiana State University, co-author of Elementary Mathematics for Teachers).  Dr. Baldridge is available for teacher training.

  • Mathematics teachers with experience in Singapore math programs:

    • Tricia Salerno, (math teacher, Phoenix, Arizona) can be reached by email at tsalerno@cox.net.

[After practicing law in Phoenix, Arizona, for eighteen years, Tricia Salerno returned to teaching elementary school in 2001.  The following year, Tricia began her training in the Singapore Math curriculum under the instruction of Yoram Sagher, and was instrumental in bringing Singapore Math to Benchmark School in Phoenix.  Tricia has taught Singapore Math in the first through sixth grades for the past five years, and received her Masters Degree in Mathematics Education in 2004.   She has trained teachers in the Singapore Math methods throughout the United States, as well as at The American School in Switzerland.  For the past three years she has served as the Math Coach at Benchmark School, which is frequently featured in Phoenix media for having some of the highest math test scores in the state.  Tricia is available for teacher training, parent training, and ongoing support in the Singapore Math methods.  Beginning June, 2007, Tricia will be devoting her full-time efforts to these pursuits.]

    • Karen Williams (teacher, North Middlesex) is available for teacher training.  Ms Williams can be contacted by email at Teacher102A@aol.com.

[Karen Williams is a 6th grade math teacher at Nissitissit Middle School in Pepperell, MA.  She has worked for the North Middlesex Regional School District for 11 years.  Before teaching students that “Math is Their Friend,”  she worked as a Title I teacher for grades 1 and 2, and a  4th  grade teacher in a self-contained classroom.  She became trained in the Singapore Math Curriculum in 2001 and has implanted this technique in her classroom with tremendous results.  Karen is now training fellow teachers from grades K – 6 the curriculum and methodology of Singapore Mathematics as well as hosting parents’ meetings for additional information in the program.  Previous to fulfilling her dream of working with children, she worked in the business world as a Compensation Analyst and Human Resources Administrator.  She holds a B.S. in Business Administration and a Masters in Education, both from the University of Lowell.]

    • Melody Hazelton (AIG Teacher, Union County Schools, North Carolina) may be reached by email at mhazel@carolina.rr.com.

[As the 2004 and 2006 AIG Teacher of the Year for Union County, Ms. Hazelton was instrumental in the process that led to the adoption of the Singapore mathematics curriculum for Union County’s gifted students. Since 2003, she has been training teachers in her own district, and has gone on to bring her expertise to conferences, school districts around North Carolina, and more recently to schools in other states. Melody Hazelton is available for sessions ranging from introductory presentations to customized training in Singapore math.]

    • Kathleen Jalalpour  (teacher, Keys School) is available for teacher training.  Ms Jalalpour can be contacted by email at kjalalpour@keysschool.com.

[Four years ago, Kathleen Jalalpour spearheaded the adoption of Singapore Math at Keys School in Palo Alto, California, where it is proving to be a sounding success < one of the only schools so far on the West Coast to use Singapore Math. She is in her 3rd year of teaching Singapore Math to grades 6 and 7, as well as coordinating the facilitation of Singapore Math in grades 1 - 5.
A native of Northern California, Kathleen studied and taught many years in Berlin, Germany. After returning to the US, she was frustrated with the US approach to math education, and spent years striving to develop her own curriculum that would teach math conceptually < from the concrete to the abstract in long units. Since adopting the Singapore Math program, she has finally found a curriculum that teaches math as it should be taught.
She has made presentations locally to parents and teachers, and is passionate about spreading awareness of this curriculum, whether to schools considering adoption, or to teachers just wishing to incorporate key elements into their existing programs.]
