Using Mental Math to Deepen Number Sense
Thursday, April 4 at 3:15 p.m. in Room 31AB
Presenters: Cassandra Turner and Beth Curran
Description: Participants will actively explore mental math strategies used through fifth grade. Engaging in mental math activities develops a relational understanding of numbers and their magnitude and gives meaning to calculations. Sharing and evaluating strategies through discourse deepens students understanding of number and builds a solid foundation.
This session is designed for grades 3-5.
Ready, Set, Play: Practicing Number Sense with Games
Friday, April 5 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 32B
Presenters: Cassandra Turner and Beth Curran
Description: Learn effective games and activities that support the development of number sense and place value for grades 1-3. Dimensions Math was developed by Singapore math teachers and trainers to create a deep understanding of math from the early grades. Teachers will leave with practical ideas and materials to take back to classrooms.
This session is designed for grades 1-3.
Counting On Play in the Classroom

Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 1:30 p.m.
Presenters: Cassandra Turner and Beth Curran
Description: Join us as we work with manipulatives to understand and practice multi-digit multiplication and long division algorithms for whole numbers and decimals. Learn how to help all learners master the move from concrete to pictorial representation to the ultimate abstract algorithm with a deep understanding of regrouping and place value.
Strategies First: Teaching Fact Fluency with Hands-on Activities and Games
Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in Room W180
Presenters: Cassandra Turner and Beth Curran
Description: If we can't teach memorization, then what do we do? Participants will learn how to develop hands-on lessons that promote deep conceptual understanding and strengthen students' number sense. We will explore strategies for teaching and learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts to make mathematics accessible to all students. Participants will engage in activities and games that promote automaticity with math facts, leaving with the tools needed to take what they learned and apply it immediately in their classrooms.
Developing Visualization Skills Through Play, Music and Movement
