##### What is the Singapore math method?

The Singapore math method is a highly effective teaching approach originally developed by Singapore’s Ministry of Education for Singapore public schools in the 1980s. The method has been widely adopted in various forms over the past twenty years following our introduction of the curriculum to the U.S. in 1998.

##### Is Dimensions Math aligned with the Common Core State Standards?

##### What are the components of Dimensions Math PK-5?

The school year is divided into two semesters. There are A and B Textbooks, Workbooks, Teacher’s Guides, and Tests corresponding to the two halves of the school year. There are also online resources.

##### When will all components for all Dimensions Math grades be available?

##### Do we need both the Textbooks and Workbooks?

Yes. Textbooks contain learning tasks that are central to lessons, as well as practices and reviews to be done in class. Workbooks contain additional practice and independent work, which can be assigned as homework or completed in the classroom.

##### What is the cost per student per year to use Dimensions Math?

The first year of use, the cost is $48 per student including all necessary Textbooks and Workbooks. In the second year and beyond, the cost is $24 per student (because Textbooks are reusable). This does not include Teacher’s Guides or Tests.

##### How are lessons structured in DM PK-5?

Each lesson opens with a problem to encourage student curiosity and introduce new concepts. Lessons include discussion and exploration, strategic use of manipulatives, and exercises that progress systematically.

Workbooks offer independent practice while maintaining the careful progression of exercise variation. They are where students hone their skills, and are a necessary component of the series.

##### How is Dimensions Math similar to Primary Mathematics?

Dimensions Math 1–5 follows the same Singapore math approach as Primary Mathematics 1–6. It emphasizes the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) progression. It centers on the use of number bonds and bar models to solve word problems, and encourages the mastery of mental math to gain number sense, computational fluency, and logical thinking.

The problem solving processes of the learning tasks deepen and broaden student understanding of concepts (in contrast to the method of simply following an example to solve a similar problem). There is minimal vocabulary and textual information. Concepts are conveyed primarily through images and careful sequencing.

##### How is Dimensions Math different from Primary Mathematics?

The Dimensions Math program is a cohesive PK-8 series (Primary Mathematics is Grades 1-6). It is an updated version of the Singapore math approach that includes much more material to support educators.

Grades PK-K include specific visualization activities and provide suggestions for small group and center work. Lessons in Grades 1-5 are well-defined and follow a consistent sequence. They begin with a problem for discussion, move to an explanation of the concepts, introduce vocabulary, and provide various approaches to solving the problem. This is followed by a set of learning tasks that extend the concept, ending with a set of problems to assess understanding.

Textbooks and Workbooks include additional problems. Workbook exercises are differentiated and include basic problems, practice problems, and challenging problems.

Teacher’s Guides are in full color and include reduced-size copies of the textbook and workbook pages for easy reference to every lesson. The Teacher’s Guides give more ideas for differentiation and include math literature suggestions.

##### What is Dimensions Math 6-8?

The Dimensions Math 6-8 series brings the Singapore math approach to middle school, emphasizing problem solving and empowering students to think mathematically. This rigorous series integrates pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, some trigonometry, and advanced math topics. Learn more here.

##### What are the components of Dimensions Math 6-8?

The school year is divided into two semesters. Grade 6 includes A and B Textbooks, Workbooks, Teacher’s Guides, and Workbook Solutions corresponding to the two halves of the school year. Grades 7-8 include Textbooks, Workbooks, Teaching Notes and Solutions, and Workbook Solutions for the two halves of the school year.

##### How are lessons structured in Dimensions Math 6-8?

Lessons begin with a class activity to encourage discovery. Worked examples of new concepts are followed by similar questions for students to solidify their understanding.

Exercises include:

- Basic Practice: Simple questions that drill comprehension of concepts
- Further Practice: More challenging questions that involve direct application
- Challenging Practice: Questions that require synthesis
- Maths@Work: Questions that apply mathematical concepts to real world situations
- Brainworks and Enrichment: Questions involving higher order thinking or an open-ended approach to problems.

Each chapter in Grades 7-8 is followed by a review exercise. The Extend Your Learning Curve activity encourages students to consider math outside the classroom with questions requiring sentence or paragraph reflections on their learning experiences.
